U.S. citizens and permanent residents can sponsor certain relatives for a green card. The right path depends on who is sponsoring, how you are related and whether your relative is in the U.S. or abroad.
- Adjustment of status Apply for a green card from inside the U.S. with Form I-485, without leaving the country.
- Consular processing Complete the immigrant visa process at a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad, including in Mexico.
- Parent, child & sibling petitions Petitions for parents, adult sons and daughters, and siblings, and how preference categories affect the wait.
- Financial sponsorship (I-864) The affidavit of support that shows a sponsor can support the relative financially, including joint sponsors.
- Visitor visas (B-2) Tourist and family-visit visas for relatives coming to the U.S. for a temporary stay.
